Film Independent has announced the nominees for the 31st Independent Spirt Awards, which will take place Saturday, February 27 at 2:00pm PT / 5:00pm ET. While current Oscar power players "Carol" and "Spotlight" had a strong showing among this morning's nominees — "Carol" leads all films with six nominations total, while "Spotlight" is tied for second place with "Beasts of No Nation" with five — it looks like the Spirit Awards largely rejected some of the season's big favorites in favor of worthy smaller titles.

Case in point: "Anomalisa" and "Tangerine," both of which walked away with four nominations in some of the biggest categories. Both films are nominated for Best Feature and Best Director, and they both surprised in the acting categories as Jennifer Jason Leigh's vocal performance in the former landed her a Best Supporting Actress nomination, while acclaimed "Tangerine" actresses Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor earned Best Female Lead and Best Supporting Female nods for the latter, respectively. Other films benefitting from multiple nominations include "Heaven Knows What," "Songs My Brother Taught Me," "It Follows" and Sundance hits "James White" and "The Diary of a Teenage Girl."
